Flossie and the Fox

Is Flossie & the Fox just a “black” version of “Little Red Riding Hood?”  If it is, what is the difference beyond the protagonist’s skin color?  What makes Flossie different from Red? If it is more than just a colorful rewrite, what does it offer to its readers that Red cannot?
